The Regimes Explained
The Indian tax system offers two paths. The Old Regime rewards savings and investments with deductions, while the New Regime (the default choice) offers lower tax rates with fewer deductions. This section helps you understand the core differences beyond the numbers.
Old Tax Regime
This regime is built on the principle of encouraging savings. It allows you to reduce your taxable income by claiming over 70 deductions for various investments and expenses.
- ✔Full access to deductions like 80C, 80D, HRA, and home loan interest.
- ✔Ideal for those with high investments and expenses like rent or home loans.
- ✖Higher tax slab rates compared to the new regime.
New Tax Regime
This regime prioritizes simplicity and lower tax rates. It is the default option and is designed for those who prefer a straightforward tax filing experience.
- ✔Lower tax rates and more slabs for gradual tax increase.
- ✔Enhanced standard deduction (₹75,000) and a powerful tax rebate making income up to ₹12 Lakh effectively tax-free.
- ✖Forgoes most major deductions, including 80C, 80D, and HRA.
Deductions Explorer (Old Regime)
This is your toolkit for tax saving under the Old Regime. Each deduction you claim reduces your taxable income, directly lowering your tax outgo. Explore the most powerful options available in Chapter VI-A of the Income Tax Act.
Section 80C: The Investment Powerhouse (up to ₹1.5 Lakh) +
This is a basket of popular options including PPF, ELSS Mutual Funds, Life Insurance Premiums, Home Loan Principal, and Children's Tuition Fees. A strategic mix can help achieve both tax savings and long-term financial goals.
Section 80D: The Health Guardian +
Allows deduction for health insurance premiums. You can claim up to ₹25,000 for self/family, plus an additional ₹25,000 (or ₹50,000 if they are senior citizens) for your parents' policy. This makes the maximum possible deduction ₹1,00,000.
NPS: The Retirement Booster (up to ₹50,000 extra) +
Section 80CCD(1B) provides an exclusive deduction of ₹50,000 for contributions to the National Pension System. This is *over and above* the ₹1.5 Lakh limit of Section 80C, enabling a total deduction of ₹2 Lakh.
Section 24(b): The Homeowner's Advantage +
Allows deduction for interest paid on a home loan for a self-occupied property, up to a maximum of ₹2,00,000 per year. This is one of the single largest deductions available to taxpayers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I file my income tax return online?
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) with your PAN, go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then File Income Tax Return. Choose the assessment year and the online mode, pick your ITR form, check the pre-filled figures against Form 16, AIS and Form 26AS, add any missing income or deductions, pay any tax due and submit. Then e-verify the return within 30 days, for example with an Aadhaar OTP.
How do I download Form 16?
Form 16 is not downloaded from the income tax portal. Your employer downloads it from the TRACES portal and gives it to you, usually by 15 June. On the income tax portal you can download your AIS and Form 26AS, which show the same tax deducted.
Which ITR form should a salaried employee use?
Most salaried residents use ITR-1 (Sahaj): total income up to ₹50 lakh from salary, one house property and other sources such as interest. If you have capital gains beyond the ITR-1 limit, more than one house property or foreign income, use ITR-2.
Which tax regime is better, old or new?
It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates but allows few deductions; the old regime allows deductions such as Section 80C (up to ₹1,50,000), 80D health insurance and home loan interest. Enter your income and deductions above to see which regime gives you the lower tax.
Which deductions does the calculator consider?
Section 80C, 80CCC and 80CCD(1) up to ₹1,50,000, Section 80D health insurance, interest on a self-occupied home loan, and other deductions such as HRA and 80E. These apply only under the old regime.
